Chanel – A Brief History
Coco Chanel, also known as, Gabrielle Chanel was the founding designer of the brand which revolutionised fashion during its early years, by producing pieces that were stylish yet comfortable to wear. At the time, women’s fashion mainly comprised of structured, restrictive clothing such as bodices and corsets, but Chanel’s creation of little black dresses and feminine suits helped redefine the world of women’s fashion, designing items that were functional yet flattering. The brand strayed away from common hourglass shapes and created more masculine, flat chested styles, a look that became popular during the 1920’s alongside the flapper girl trend, which also featured slim silhouettes and and dropped waistlines.
Not only is Chanel well known for its fashion, but it is also one of the most popular names within the fragrance industry. The Chanel No5 perfume is one the best selling scents of all time. Even the perfume bottle has become famous in its own right. The iconic design is instantly recognisable and has kept the same look since it was first introduced in 1921. The name of the perfume came from the fact that Chanel would debut its collections on the 5th day of the 5th month each year and Coco believed it would bring good luck to name the scent No5.
