Baselworld 2019 Summary
On March 21st – 26th this year, Baselworld once again opened its doors for its prestigious six-day trade fair in Basel, Switzerland. Showcasing all the latest trends and designs in jewellery and timepieces from many of the world’s most significant brands, Baselworld is the watchmaking industry’s biggest international event, bringing in thousands of visitors each Spring.
Following on from our Baselworld predictions blog last month, here at Miltons Diamonds, we’ve taken a look at some of the key aspects to take away from this year’s event, including Rolex Baselworld 2019 trends.
Fewer Watch Brands Than Usual
This was one factor we predicted that did indeed prove to be correct. The exhibition space of Baselworld was reduced by one third in 2018 and showcased half the amount of exhibitors than in 2017. This year’s show has demonstrated this drop is likely to continue, as Baselworld 2019 saw even more brands absent from the event, most notably the Swatch group, whose brands include Omega and Longines.
Green and Blue Hues
As seen last year, it seems that the popularity of colourful watches is continuing to dominate, with many brands exhibiting blue or green watches this year, too. While blue remained a popular hue throughout the fair, we saw a rise in green designs at Basel 2019. Rolex for one demonstrated a new ‘green ombré dial’ used on the luxurious Rolex Day-Date 36 as well as an ‘olive green’ Diamond set IV dial used on the iconic Rolex Datejust 31.
Baselworld 2019 also once again demonstrated the big resurgence of the vintage trend of recent years, with many brands offering recreations of former and iconic designs. As we predicted, Seiko was one of the brands to contribute to this trend in Baselworld 2019, revealing a redesign of its iconic 1970’s diver’s watch with the Prospex. Other prominent brands that reenvisioned earlier models and gave a nod to the vintage trend were Breitling, with the reimagining of its 1959 806 Navitimer, and Zodiac’s update of its 1960’s Aerospace.
Rolex Baselworld 2019 Updates
As one of the biggest stars of the event, it’s always interesting to see what Rolex will bring to the table every year and, as predicted, in Baselworld 2019, Rolex revealed several new and updated designs.
This year saw the ever popular Oyster Perpetual Datejust 31 and the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 36 receive updated dials, and new-generation calibre 2236 and 3235 movements. The Yacht-Master has also received a significant update; now available in white gold with an increased size of 42mm, a matt black bezel and a rubber Oysterflex bracelet, this watch is sure to be a firm favourite of any watch enthusiast.
Following the huge success of the Rolex GMT-Master II ‘Pepsi’ redesign, perhaps the most talked about of the Baselworld 2019 Rolex exhibit was the new GMT-Master II ‘Batman’, featuring a jubilee bracelet and striking black and blue bezel.
