What is a Rolex?
A Rolex watch is a luxury timepiece which has been crafted from the finest raw materials and assembled with the most particular attention to detail. A Rolex takes on a role beyond that of a mere timekeeper. They are often seen as a status symbol, and depending on the model, can be used for several different eventualities, from expeditions and deep-sea diving to special events and dinner dates.
Where is Rolex from?
Rolex was founded in England; however, Rolex SA is now a Swiss Luxury watch manufacturer based in Geneva, Switzerland.
When was Rolex founded?
Rolex was founded in 1905, by Hans Wilsdorf. At the age of 24, Hans Wilsdorf founded a company in London specialising in the distribution of timepieces. At this time wristwatches were not very precise, but his visionary spirit foresaw that they could become more than just elegant, but reliable too. The story began when he created the first waterproof wristwatch – the Oyster – which developed into a collection of timepieces that are still icons in watchmaking today.
In 1908, Hans Wilsdorf created the brand name ‘Rolex’. He wanted a short, easy to say and remember name that could be used in every language. He also wanted the brand name to sit elegantly on watch movement and dials, just like it does today. Rolex became Rolex watch Co. Ltd in 1915.
Where are Rolex watches made?
Today, Rolex watches are manufactured in Geneva, Switzerland. As well as their manufacturing station, Rolex have their very own internal Research and Development departments across their various facilities. These well-equipped professional science labs don’t just research new watches; they look into how they can make their manufacturing techniques more efficient and effective. This highlights what a competent and organised manufacturing company Rolex are.
Who owns Rolex?
In 1945, Hans Wilsdorf set up the ‘Hans Wilsdorf Foundation’. In 1960, he handed 100% of his ownership stake in Rolex to this foundation. This now controls Rolex to this day and donates a proportion of it’s income to charity and social causes in Geneva, Switzerland.
Why are Rolex watches expensive?
Rolex spends it’s time developing more efficient manufacturing methods, as well as new techniques to keep ahead of the curve. They have very high in-house development costs in both design and craftsmanship, a fusion of engineering and watchmakers art. The materials are of a very high quality, which makes them more expensive than the materials used on a standard watch. Rolex tends to use 904L steel which is leagues ahead of even most luxury market equivalents, as they tend to use 316L steel.
Which Rolex watch is the most popular?
How to know if a Rolex is real
There are a number of ways to ensure the watch you’re buying is real, and not fake. Our first tip would be to ensure you trust the seller and check out reviews so you can compare other peoples experiences. A 5-star rating on Trustpilot should be a good indicator; they are a trustworthy source.
- Serial & model numbers
On any real Rolex watch, you will find that the markings are engraved in perfect fine lines. On older Rolex watches you can find these between the lugs when the bracelet has been removed. On newer Rolex you can see the serial number on the inner Rehaut. Cheap fake Rolex watches generally have low-quality markings, making them easy to spot.
Some replica Rolex watches won’t bother to add these to the bracelets, and if they do, you will find that they can be extremely low quality and not precise enough, in a poor quality fake.
- The dial
The dial of a real Rolex watch will always be perfect, poor replica styles may have uneven, blotchy fonts and misspellings.
Rolex does not tend to engrave their casebacks (only in some instances). If your Rolex has engravings on it then chances are it is a fake or replica watch. A popular fake Rolex Cosmograph Daytona has ‘Daytona’ engraved on the back of the case.
As we are stockists of pre-owned Rolex watches, we ensure each of our timepieces have been expertly referenced against technical documents and manufacturer records to ensure originality and a clean history. This gives our customers confidence that they are investing in a real pre-owned Rolex model. Each product description states what the item comes with in terms of authenticity, for example, box and papers.
