Best Chain Length on Men: A Detailed Guide
• ConorFaulkner
Trying to work out what necklace length to choose for your men’s chain? The right length can make all the difference in comfort, appearance and style. So, how should you decide?
Start by asking yourself a few questions:
- When will I wear my chain?
- What’s my collar size and body type?
- Will my chain have a pendant attached?
- How do I want to style my chain - with an open shirt or over a t-shirt?
All great questions, and determine which chain length is the most suitable choice for you.
That’s why we’ve put together this helpful guide to steer you, covering every standard chain size, who they’re best suited for and styling inspiration.
Breakdown of Standard Men’s Necklace Lengths:
Let’s explore the most common lengths of men’s chains in both centimetres and inches, including where they typically sit and who they’re best suited for:
| Chain length | Where it sits | Best for… |
| 40.6cm (16”) | Falls just under the Adam’s Apple. | Slim builds, typically worn as a choker on average-sized men. Ideal for showcasing small pendants close to the neck. |
| 45.7cm (18”) | Sits at the base of the neck or just above the collarbone. | Smaller neck-sized men, who have a 15 ½” or under collar size. Suitable for small to medium pendants worn close to the neck. |
| 50.8cm (20”) | Falls at the top of the upper chest, around the 1st or 2nd shirt button. | Average neck-sized men who have a 16-17” collar size. A versatile, standard length for most builds and pendant sizes. |
| 55.9cm (22”) | Rests just below the collarbone. | Large neck-sized men, who have a 17 ½” collar size. Provides a bit more hang for pendants, adding visual emphasis. |
| 61cm (24”) | Hangs just above the sternum in the middle of the chest. | Again, larger neck-sized men, around 18” collar size. Good for layering or showcasing larger pendants. |
| 66cm (26”) | Sits in the middle of the sternum, around armpit level. | Taller individuals or those looking for a more dramatic, fashion-inspired look. Pairs well with open shirts. |
| 71.1cm (28”) | Falls lower down on the sternum. | Best for larger pendants or statement pieces. Ideal if you prefer longer chains, or want to layer with shorter ones. |
| 76.2cm (30”) | Falls mid-chest, just above the nipple line. | Anything above 18” collar size. Suitable for religious or symbolic pendants meant to rest close to the heart. |
| 81.3cm (32”) | Sits at the base of the sternum, in line with the nipple. | Great for layering, oversized pendants, or creating a bold style statement. |
Top tip: Remember to account for any pendant you’re attaching to your chain, as this will cause the chain length to dip slightly lower than expected.
Choosing a Chain Based on Body Type
While collar size plays a large part in how the necklace falls, your height, neck length and chest build will also influence the final look.
-
Shorter, slimmer body type: For instance, a slimmer or athletic man who has smaller neck and chest measurements would opt for a shorter chain - perhaps around the 18” (45.7cm) to 20” (50.8cm) mark.
- Taller or more muscular body type: Whereas, broader, muscular or larger men could prefer longer chains to complement their larger necks and chests, maintaining proportion - usually around 20” (50.8cm) to 24” (61cm).
Which Chain Length For Which Occasion?
Now that we’ve covered fit and body type, let’s look at how to choose the right chain length based on when and where you’ll wear it.
We’ll break this down into four key sections:
- Everyday wear
- Formal events
- Worn with a pendant
- Layering chains
Best Men’s Chain Length for Everyday Wear
On average, the best chain length for everyday wear is usually around 20 inches (50.8cm), falling at the top of the upper chest.
This length of chain is often chosen for daily wear as it sits comfortably and naturally, without feeling too restrictive around the neck or hanging too loose on clothing. It also works just as well with or without a pendant, for both casual t-shirts and button shirts.
If you’re slightly smaller than average with a small build or shorter neck, an 18” (45.7cm) chain may be a better fit, while if you’re taller or have a wider neck, you might choose a 22” (55.9cm) chain.
Best Men’s Chain Length for Formal Events
For formal events, such as weddings, corporate parties or ceremonies, the best chain lengths are typically shorter, more discreet lengths that complement dress shirts, suits or tuxedos without overpowering your outfit.
We’d suggest this usually sits between 18” to 22” (45.7cm to 50.8cm).
The 18” (45.7cm) chains provide a clean, minimal aesthetic, just peeking under an open collar, while a chain around 20-22” (50.8cm - 55.9cm) is a good balance between subtlety and visibility, working well with open-collar shirts.
Be sure to avoid long chains (anything from 24” and above), chunky chains or oversized pendants, as these will likely take the focus away from your outfit, and may look out of place at a formal affair.
Top tip: Try and match the metal tone to your other accessories, such as watches or belt buckles, for a coordinated, polished look.
Best Chain Lengths for Pendants
Again, this depends on the size of the pendant and your collar size, but anywhere between 18” to 24” is a guaranteed sweet spot for most men.
-
Small pendants: An 18” (45.7cm) chain is a great choice for a small pendant worn close to the neck, giving a discreet look, sitting at the base of the neck.
-
Medium pendants: A versatile choice, 20” (50.8cm) chains work best for medium-sized pendants, falling around the upper chest.
- Larger or statement pendants: A 22” - 24” (55.9 or 61cm) chain would be best for more bold, noticeable pendants, or layering with shorter chains, sitting around the mid-chest.
If you’re wearing a chain for sentimental reasons or cultural expression (such as religious symbols, heirlooms or crystals), you may want the chain visible or just peeking out of the shirt. For this type of style, a length of around 20” (50.8cm) to 24” (61cm) is the best for pendant visibility.
However, sometimes wearing the symbol itself and knowing it’s there is enough, meaning you may prefer longer chains around nipple height (30”) with less visibility. For religious choices, this could also tie in with having the pendant close to the heart.
Top tip: Ensuring your chain isn’t too high is important, as it can feel constricting and uncomfortable if it’s sitting too close to your neck.
Best Chain Lengths for Layering
To layer chains successfully, the key is contrast: length, texture and thickness all need to contrast one another, else it can look messy and overcrowded.
-
Top chain: 18” - 20” (45.7cm or 50.8cm) chains that are thin and minimal can act as a great starter layer.
-
Middle chain: 22” (55.9cm) chains, which are slightly thicker than the top chain, can add balance.
- Bottom chain: Now, 2 may be enough, but for a bold statement set, a pendant or a thick chain of around 24 - 26” (61cm or 66cm) would pull the look together.
Top tip: Stick with 2-3 chains of varying length and thickness to avoid any tangling or awkward overlapping.
