Where Are Diamonds Commonly Found?

Russia is another major producer of diamonds, particularly from the Siberian region. The Mirny Mine in Siberia is one of the largest diamond mines in the world.

Canada has also emerged as a significant diamond-producing country, with mines located in regions such as the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. The Diavik and Ekati mines are among the most prominent in Canada.

Australia is also known for its diamond production, with mines located in regions such as Western Australia and the Northern Territory. The Argyle mine, which has been a major source of coloured diamonds, including pink diamonds, is located in Western Australia.

The Process of Forming a Diamond

Deep down in the Earth's second layer called the mantle, carbon atoms go through an incredible change due to intense heat and pressure. After millions of years, these atoms crystallise into a unique structure and turn into diamonds - which are known as one of the hardest materials in the world.

Volcanic activity can often bring diamonds up to the Earth's surface. When a volcano erupts, kimberlite eruption can take place, forming a rare type of hot magma deep in the Earth, bringing along diamonds that were created in the mantle. Some diamonds get pushed up with this magma, but others stay stuck in the Earth's crust.

When diamonds make their way up to the Earth's surface, they can be found in geological formations known as kimberlite pipes. These pipes act like vertical pathways for diamonds and other minerals to travel from deep within the Earth to the surface.

Kimberlite pipes are created by volcanic activity and are typically located in areas that have experienced volcanic eruptions in the past.

In addition to kimberlite pipes, diamonds can also be found in alluvial deposits like riverbeds and sedimentary layers. As time goes on, erosion and weathering break free diamonds from their rocky host material, making it possible for them to be carried downstream and left behind in alluvial plains.

In the end, finding and retrieving diamonds out of the ground is a detailed process that involves mining and extraction. Miners use advanced technology to carefully dig through tunnels and open pits to find these valuable gemstones.

What is the Process For Artificial Diamonds?

The process of making synthetic diamonds involves controlling the temperature, pressure, and gas composition to help diamond crystals develop.

The laboratory-grown diamonds that are produced have the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and physical properties as natural diamonds, so they look identical as mined diamonds to the naked eye.

There are different techniques that can be used to create laboratory-grown diamonds that all work to recreate the conditions of what a diamond would need to be made.

One such technique is the high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) method in which a small diamond seed and metallic flux is placed into a chamber where carbon-rich gases are heated to extreme temperatures and pressures.

In these conditions, the carbon atoms stick to the diamond seed and slowly crystallise, adding layer by layer to create a bigger diamond. It might take a few days or weeks for this process to finish, depending on how big the laboratory-grown diamond is needed to be.

Another way to do this is using the chemical vapour deposition (CVD) method, where they, once again, place a diamond seed in a vacuum chamber filled with plasma. The high-temperature plasma aids carbon atoms to stick to the surface of the diamond seed, gradually building up layers of diamond material.

Unlike the HPHT method, which relies on high temperatures and pressures, the CVD process operates at lower pressures and temperatures, typically around 700-900°C. This method can also take several days or weeks to produce a synthetic diamond of desired size and quality.
