How to Care For and Clean Your Platinum Rings
• benjohnson
Platinum rings are timeless, elegant and a durable choice for everyday wear. Whether yours is a wedding band, a family heirloom passed down through generations, or your favourite jewellery piece, it is important to know the best ways to maintain their shine.
Platinum has a high resistance to tarnish and wear, making it a popular choice for everyday wear. In today's blog, we will take a look into the basics of cleaning your platinum rings, and the best ways you can take care of them.

Platinum Rings
Platinum rings are a popular choice due to their durability and shine. Platinum is a dense material and unlikely to wear down over time making it the perfect choice for everyday wear.
Its natural white shine pairs perfectly against diamonds and other stones making it a great choice for engagement rings and other jewellery pieces. While platinum is typically more expensive than metals like gold, it is definitely worth the scaled-up price.
How to Clean Your Platinum Rings
Although platinum is extremely durable, it can still accumulate dirt, oils and scratches over time. Don't worry - cleaning your platinum rings is simple:

What You Need
- Mild unfragranced soap
- Warm water
- Soft-bristled brush or toothbrush
- Soft microfibre cloth
Step 1
Place your ring in a bowl with the soapy water and allow it to soak for up to 15 minutes. This will give enough time for any dirt to lift off the surface of your ring, making it easier for you to scrub it away.
Step 2
Once the dirt and oils have lifted, begin to gently clean your ring. Pay attention to any intricate parts of your ring, where dirt may have accumulated. Be extra careful around any stones or diamonds and be gentle whilst cleaning. If there is still stubborn dirt on your ring, allow it to soak for a little longer and clean it away again.
Step 3
Once you are certain you have removed all of the dirt, thoroughly rinse your ring under running water, making sure to remove all of the soap residue. If you leave soap residue on your ring, it can build up in the crevices and the ring won't shine as well as it can, so make sure to double rinse!
Step 4
Finally, gently pat your ring dry with a microfibre cloth before optionally using a polishing cloth to restore the shine of your ring before you store your ring away in your jewellery box or wear it.
How Often Should You Clean Your Platinum Rings
Regularly cleaning your ring is essential to maintain its natural shine and appearance. You should aim to clean your rings once a month.
Cleaning once a month will prevent any dirt from building up - and staying on top of your jewellery cleaning routine will make the cleaning process a lot easier in the long term.
You should also aim to get your jewellery professionally cleaned and checked once a year. This is especially the case if your ring has intricate detailing - a professional jeweller will be able to get into all of the crevices. A professional jeweller will also be able to check for any damages or wear to claws on your ring and repair as necessary.

Where Should You Store Your Rings?
Storing your rings correctly is just as important as cleaning your rings. When you're not wearing your platinum ring, you should place it in a jewellery box, in a soft cloth or in a soft pouch. Make sure each piece of jewellery is separate from each other to prevent scratching.
You should also remove your rings before engaging in any activities that could damage them such as gardening, cleaning, or working out. Even though platinum is extremely durable, you still need to be careful with your rings to keep them looking their best - they are not invincible.
You should also consider removing your platinum ring whilst showering or bathing, as too much exposure to hot water can dull the natural shine of your ring over time.
What if I Scratch My Platinum Ring?
Don't worry if you scratch your platinum ring - it is not as serious as you may think. - you're not actually losing any platinum.
The metal is just shifting from one place of the ring to another, meaning no platinum is lost, it is just displaced. To move the platinum black to the correct part of the ring, use a polishing cloth to smooth out any scratches.
