Omega Watches vs Rolex Watches: Which Should I Choose?

• benjohnson

OMEGA and Rolex are two of the largest brands of watches on the market, making comparisons between the two incredibly common. So, which brand is better for you?

Both brands have luxury watches designed to suit any enthusiast, which is why in this blog post, we will be looking at the differences between the two brands and what you should look out for when making your choice.

The History of Rolex

Dating back to 1905 in London, Rolex started by selling pocket watches designed by Hans Wilsdorf. In 1919, the brand moved to Switzerland due to several reasons, but notably heavy post-war taxes.

At the time, wristwatches were seen as unreliable and not very precise. However, Hans Wilsdorf was motivated by changing the stigmas around wristwatches, which led him to create Rolex.

By 1980, Rolex was a luxury brand that was known worldwide for its quality and accuracy, a notion that has continued through to today. Rolex still make watches in four major facilities based in Switzerland:

  • Geneva
  • Bienne
  • Plan les Ouates
  • Chene Bourg

The History of Omega

Omega is a Swiss brand that was founded in 1848 by Louis Brandt in the Swiss village of La Chaux-de-Fonds, although it would be his sons who would coin the name Omega and change watch-making forever.

After Louis’ death in 1879, his sons, Louis-Paul and Cesar Brandt, would resume their father’s legacy by continuing to innovate in the watchmaking world. In 1892, they created the world’s first minute-repeating wristwatch, two years before the company would be renamed to Omega, creating the iconic brand we know today.

Omega has been the official timekeeper of the Olympics since 1932 due to its reliability and precision. NASA astronauts wore the Omega Speedmaster model to the moon in 1969!

Which Brand Is More Popular?

Both brands are highly popular for all of the right reasons. Both excelled in the luxury watch industry for their high quality and prestigious reputation. However, Rolex is considered the more popular choice for a luxury brand watch.

Rolex produces at least one million watches per year and Omega produces around half a million, so some may argue that Rolex is the more popular brand.

Omega vs Rolex: Key Factors

When it comes to Omega and Rolex watches both equally have their individual qualities which make them excellent timepieces. Both watches have fantastic reputations, so let's take a look into some of the qualities of each.

Aesthetic

When it comes down to aesthetics, both watches have stunning designs and are made from the highest quality materials. Featuring different colour bezels and colourways, this creates a stand-out piece.

Although both brands have a wide selection of different models, apart from small details, there are not many differences in each model. This will simply be a personal preference when choosing your watch.

Quality and Craftsmanship

Both brands showcase the craftsmanship of Swiss watchmaking, using top-quality materials such as 18k gold, platinum and certain alloys like Omega’s Sedna gold and Rolex’s Rolesium.

Rolex is well known for making watches that are robust, long-lasting, and finely finished. Omega, on the other hand, is mostly recognised for using innovative materials and advanced movement technology. However, this does not mean that either brand lacks models that specialise in these other areas.

Omega have previously designed watches that have set world records for their water resistance. For example, the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep is rated for an extraordinary water resistance of 6,000 metres!

Precision

COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres) is a third-party organisation that determines the accuracy and precision of luxury watches. This organisation is also known as the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute.

Both watches are known for their precision when it comes to timekeeping. COSC states that a mechanical movement must have an average daily rate of -4 to +6 seconds.

  • Most Rolex watches have an average daily rate of -2 to +2 seconds!
  • Omega has previously achieved a certified accuracy rating of 0/+2 seconds!

Which is More Expensive?

Whilst both watch brands are luxury and feature expensive models in their collections, Rolex is generally more expensive than Omega. The starting price of Rolex costs almost double the most affordable Omega watch.

Personal Preference

Finally, no matter how popular, rare or expensive a watch is, it all comes down to personal preference when choosing your favourite brand.

As we have looked at both watch brands it is determined that both watch brands are of excellent quality and are perfect watch choices.

You should try on a few different styles and sizes of both Omega and Rolex models to determine which is your preferred choice. Consider your lifestyle – do you need a watch for everyday-wear or do you perhaps need a sporting watch?

Both watches are high up in the luxury watch world and are respected choices by watch fanatics.
