The History Behind Tag Heuer

Tag Heuer is renowned for its precision and bold style which revolutionised the watch industry. Here’s a brief timeline:

  • 1860 - The brand Heuer was established
  • Age 20 - Edward Heuer opened his first watchmaking shop, which quickly grew and became known for its pocket watches.
  • 1867 - Heuer moved his business to a town in Bienne, Switzerland where the company remained for over a hundred years.
  • 1980 - sporting events became increasingly popular, noticing a gap in the market Edward Heuer jumped at the chance to use this to his advantage and designed a selection of pocket chronographs. These pocket chronographs could be used to time races on the roads and also horseracing and they quickly became a status symbol.
  • 1985 - The company changed its name to Tag Heuer, when Techniques d'Avant Garde (TAG), who were known for their high-tech products, acquired the Heuer company. In 1999, the TAG Group sold the majority of Tag Heuer to the Paris-based European luxury goods conglomerate LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE.

Let's take a closer look at some of the significant years in history for Tag Heuer.

1908 - 1933

In 1908, Heuer took innovation to the next level and began to create timepieces for medical use. Heuers' new sphygmometer pocket chronograph allowed doctors to determine their patient's pulse rate after previously only counting heartbeats for 20 seconds.

By 1911, Edward Heuer had designed a rugged instrument to be installed on the dashboards of the new generation of vehicles.

Known as the “Time of Trip” it was a precision chronograph, telling the time of day on the main dial, while two hands on a smaller dial recorded the duration of a journey. It also included a pusher so that the pilot or driver was able to record the ‘time of trip’.

In 1914, Heuer designed their first wristwatch, and by 1916, Heuer began creating stopwatches. These stopwatches were the best on the market and eventually were used in the Olympic games and other world championships.

1980 - 2004

In 1986, the ‘Formula 1’ was created. This watch offered fun colours, plastic cases and quartz movements. The ‘Formula 1 ‘model can still be purchased today with a modernised but classic style.

In 1996, the brand reconnected with their classic chronographs from the 1960s and they relaunched Tag Heuer Carrera. This watch followed the style of the previous 1960s mode to almost every detail.

In 2004, the famous ‘Aquaracer’ was introduced with features dating back to Heuer's first dive watches from the early 1980s.

2015 - Today

Adapting to modern-day technology, in 2015, Tag Heuer introduced their first-ever smartwatch.

In 2019, to mark the 50th anniversary of Monaco, Tag Heuer released a series of five limited edition watches, each reflecting the style of each decade.
