The Rolex Yacht-Master vs. the Submariner: What’s the difference?
• benjohnson
Few sports watches have shown as much influence as the Rolex Yacht-Master and Submariner. One is the brand’s most famous model, while the other stands as a luxurious classic.
The 1953 Rolex Submariner is revered as the top nautical timepiece for divers and gained iconic status as James Bond’s signature watch before Omega took over. In contrast, the 1992 Yacht-Master presents a strong challenge with its timeless design and rich yachting heritage.
Despite their distinctive looks and mechanics, the Yacht-Master and Submariner are closely linked, complicating the choice for Rolex collectors. Here, we explore the differences between the two series to help you choose which is best for you.

Rolex Yacht-Master vs. the Submariner
Another of our blog posts discusses the distinctive histories of the Yacht-Master, but before we explore the differences between these two iconic timepieces, let’s discuss the two separately.
The Rolex Submariner
Widely regarded as the most famous Rolex, the Submariner made history in 1953 as the first diver's watch waterproof to 100 metres.

Today, it holds legendary status in Rolex’s catalogue, having undergone updates to enhance its waterproof depth to 300 metres and cosmetic changes that solidify its reputation as Rolex’s most notorious piece.
Initially designed for divers, the Submariner's appeal extends far beyond that community. Each model sets a global benchmark for divers' watches while providing Rolex collectors with a practical yet luxurious timepiece.
The Rolex Yacht-Master
Launched in 1992, the Rolex Yacht-Master bezel enables users to measure time intervals, ideal for yacht racing. Its design prioritises luxury, with the original model showcasing a striking gold profile that stands out in any setting.

Upon its release, the Yacht-Master was positioned as a luxury watch crafted from premium materials like gold and platinum, quickly gaining popularity among Rolex collectors. This success led to the introduction of the Yacht-Master II in 2007, which reimagined the classic with an exaggerated aesthetic, sparking mixed reactions among collectors.
Today, the Yacht-Master series is regarded as a timeless icon, blending glamorous design, rich sailing heritage, and exemplary sporting features, maintaining its relevance since its inception.
How are the Rolex Submariner and Yacht-Master related?
The Rolex Submariner and Yacht-Master are renowned for their iconic designs dedicated to sports enthusiasts' needs. However, they share much more than seafaring heritage, with the Yacht-Master rumoured to originally be an adventurous remodelling of the classic diver’s watch.
Rumours indicate that Rolex had plans to redesign the famed Submariner watch, creating a more luxurious take on the classic. However, plans were abandoned for undisclosed reasons, leaving the Swiss brand with unfinished work.
Rather than abandoning the project entirely, Rolex released a separate model: The 1992 Yacht-Master. This new timepiece offered collectors a more glamorous showpiece than the Submariner, with an unapologetically luxurious look.

What’s the difference between the Yacht-Master and the Submariner?
There’s no denying that these two timepieces share similar aesthetics. However, there is a world of difference between them. Read on as we delve into the differences between the Yacht-Master and Submariner!
The bezels
Rolex offers a range of bezels, from those that enhance aesthetics and luxury to functional ones that elevate a timepiece into a tool watch. Both the Submariner and Yacht-Master feature practical bezels without sacrificing luxury.
Submariner bezels are made from durable, scratch-resistant aluminium and ceramic alloys. They are unidirectional to prevent confusion during diving, marked for 60 minutes with clear indicators for the first 15—a vital safety feature.
In contrast, the Yacht-Master's bezel rotates both ways, providing flexibility for timing regattas. Crafted from premium materials like platinum and 18ct gold, it boasts raised 60-minute markers that sit atop the bezel instead of being engraved.
The dials
The Submariner and Yacht-Master have been available with various dial styles and colours. However, the Yacht-Master was the first Rolex to feature the maxi dial, with oversized hour markers and wider hands. While the maxi dial has historically divided opinion, it serves a distinct purpose for yachting enthusiasts, making the dial much easier to read.
The maxi dial would be added to the Submariner much later (Vintage models like the 5513 dials also share this nickname), offering a chromalight display for enhanced visibility underwater and in dark environments, an essential safety feature for divers.
Differences in Movement
The Submariner and Yacht-Master previously used the calibre 3135 movement, powering the Submariner since 1998. In 2019, Rolex updated the 126622 Yacht-Master with the calibre 3235, enhancing its efficiency by about 15% and providing a 70-hour power reserve.
This update gave the Yacht-Master an edge over the Submariner, which later adopted the 3235 movement with the launch of the 126610 Submariner in 2020.
Yacht-Master and Submariner sizes
The Yacht-Master was the first sports watch available in three sizes: 29mm, 35mm, and 40mm. On the contrary, the Submariner is largely available in 40mm and 41mm sizes. However, between 1953 and 1959, several stainless steel Submariner models were available in 37mm.
