What Does Diamond Carat Mean?
• benjohnson
Carat weight is a familiar term associated with diamonds; the carat of a diamond often helps determine its value but is that always the case?
Diamonds are popular and loved by almost everyone, but what does the term carat, actually mean?
In today's blog post, we will take a look into the meaning behind diamond carat, the ways that a diamond is valued, and why a high carat may not always mean a higher price tag.

How Are Diamonds Formed?
It can take anywhere between 1 and 3.3 billion years for a diamond to form naturally. Diamonds are formed deep below the earth's crust as a result of carbon atoms fusing at extreme pressure and temperatures.
Diamonds reach the surface of the earth through volcanic eruptions and shifts in the earth's crust. They can then be mined and used in various applications like tools and technology - and of course, to create sparkling jewellery.

Diamond Carat Explained
Diamond carat is the term used to describe the weight of a diamond. Each carat weighs 0.200 grams.
To work out the carat of a diamond, you must calculate the weight of the diamond in grams and divide the weight by 0.2. However, due to the lightweight nature of Diamonds, specialist scales are required for this.
Here is a simple formula: (diamond weight) / 0.2 = (carat diamond)
So, if a diamond weighs 0.6, divide it by 0.2 and you will get 3. This means it is a 3-carat diamond.
Often Diamonds are set into jewellery making it impossible to weigh a Diamond. When this problem occurs, Gemoligsts use precise measuring tools to calculate the carat weight. The Diamond's dimensions are entered into a specific calculation based on its shape or cut.
The term carat originates back to ancient times when traders used the seeds of the carob tree as a reference when weighing gemstones, such as diamonds. Before scales were invented, the seeds were used because they had a reliable weight of 0.2 grams each.
Ancient traders used a basic balance scale to measure gemstones. This type of scale has two pans hanging at equal distances from a central point, with one pan containing the diamond and the other containing the carob seeds.
4Cs of a Diamond
The value of a diamond is measured by the 4C’s. Carat, cut, clarity and colour. Together, each part goes into the decided value and quality of the diamond. But what do they all mean?
Carat
As explained earlier, the carat of the diamond refers to the weight or size of the diamond. Whilst a large-carat diamond may seem impressive, it may not rank strong in other areas, which can lower its overall value.
Cut
The cut of the diamond is an essential part of the quality and brilliance of the diamond. Poorly cut diamonds refract light as well as higher quality cuts, making the diamond appear less sparkly and duller.
Clarity
The clarity is the natural imperfections on a diamond that may alter its appearance. Diamonds with fewer imperfections and blemishes are considered a higher price due to their clearer appearance.
Colour
Diamond colour is presented on a scale ranging from D to Z (colourless to yellow). The highest grade of diamond is colourless at D and the ranking progresses further down the alphabet until the colour in a diamond begins to become more noticeable.
Not everyone prefers a colourless diamond though, and some people like their diamonds with a bit of colour. So, although this can impact the value of a diamond, it also comes down to personal preference and your individual style.
Why Does High Carat Not Always Mean High Value?
When people think of diamonds and they see a higher carat, most people will naturally assume it has a higher value and will be more expensive.
This is not always the case. Just because the carat is high, this doesn't mean the cut is the best, or the diamond has 0 imperfections.
That is why you should always check the cut, clarity and colour of a diamond before jumping into buying it for its carat weight.
How to Choose the Perfect Diamond Carat
Finding the perfect diamond carat to suit your style and budget is essential. Whether you are looking for some diamond earrings, a necklace or even an engagement ring, the carat of the diamond can have a significant impact on the appearance and price.
There are a few considerations you should make when choosing the perfect diamond carat. For example:

Budget
Think about how much you are willing to spend on your diamond. A higher carat weight usually indicates a higher price, but remember that isn't always the case.
Consider whether you would rather have a smaller carat but higher quality diamond with a better cut and a brighter colour, or if you would rather have a larger carat that isn't as good quality for your budget.
Visual Size vs. Carat Weight
The carat weight doesn't always indicate size. The cut of the diamond can actually make lower-carat diamonds appear larger. Certain shapes like oval pear and marquise can appear larger for the carat weight.
Style
Think about personal style, or your loved one’s personal style if you're shopping for an engagement ring. Are you looking for a bold statement piece or something a little more dainty?
Finger Size
If you're shopping for a ring then consider the finger size. A larger carat weight can overwhelm a smaller finger whereas it may look perfect on a larger finger and vice versa.
