Introducing the Rolex Datejust
Released in 1945, the Rolex Datejust was one of the most luxurious Rolex timepieces of its time. It was created to celebrate the brand’s 40th anniversary, acknowledging four decades of luxury Rolex watches and excellence with an iconic design as relevant today as it was upon release.

The Datejust was the first waterproof, self-winding wristwatch with a 3 o'clock date window. Later, Rolex would enhance this function with a Cyclops lens, making the date window easier to read.
Originally only available in solid gold, the Datejust was irrefutably prestigious. However, Rolex quickly expanded upon this offering with full stainless steel and Rolesor models, the latter being Rolex’s proprietary two-tone combination of steel and gold.
Introducing the Rolex Day-Date
The Day-Date was introduced to the Rolex catalogue in 1956, along with a new bracelet called the President.
As the bracelet's 'President' name suggests, the Day-Date was made with luxury in mind. It was, and still is, exclusively crafted using precious metals, cementing its status as a truly prestigious timepiece.
The Day-Date also featured a date window alongside a window displaying the full day of the week. Today, this is available in a wide range of languages and is worn by leaders worldwide.

Initially, the Day-Date was exclusively issued as a 36mm model. However, this changed in the 2000s when Rolex introduced a special collection called the Masterpiece. This unique series featured Day-Date dials and 39mm cases adorned with Pearlmaster bracelets. However, after approximately a decade, Rolex discontinued the Masterpiece series.
In 2008, the 41mm Day-Date II made its debut and, in doing so, claimed the title of the largest Rolex President watch ever created. But despite its notable size, this model was relatively short-lived, eventually replaced by the current Day-Date 40. Despite losing a millimetre, the Day-Date 40 presents a visibly larger profile than the traditional 36mm model.

Movements and functions
A crucial factor to consider in the Rolex Day-Date vs Datejust debate is each model's calendar functionality. This has evolved significantly over the years, with features such as the quickset function in the mid-70s and advanced calibres in the latest iterations.
The quickset function was introduced for both Rolex models in the mid-70s, allowing the wearer to adjust the date independently without rotating the main hands through a 24-hour cycle. However, the Day-Date's movement was only a single quickset, meaning only the date numeral could be forwarded easily.
